Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

How would i be able to build a sub woofer without buying a new one for about $1200 or more?? I just want to buy maybe a 10" woofer and learn how to build just 1 sub woofer. I was thinking of doing it sometime in the future. Does anyone have any really good sites on speaker design?? Also, does anyone know do they make a speaker design computer program?? Please reply back with any help. Thanx..

Hi Derek,

Does anyone have any really good sites on speaker design??

Please search the forum (again) for "UniBox", "WinISD", "LSPCAD" or just "speaker software". You'll get many hits, you just have to read the thread results carefully, as only you can decide what fits your needs. For a starting point in case of subwoofer simulation, virtually any speaker software will probably be sufficient, depending on the actual enclosure concept you have in mind.

Also, does anyone know do they make a speaker design computer program??

Talking about enclosures? Box design is usually done in your head. ;)
Once you know what you want, you could model it with any 2D or 3D cad software (search for cad software). But most people rather build a couple of prototypes than start to learn new software concepts...

Hi Derek
Welcome to this great DIY audio forum.
I build a set of speakers last year without any prior knowledge, and they came out great. I also am building a subwoofer at present. Speaker design software that helped me alot are:
WinISD http://www.linearteam.org/winisd.html
Here you will also find plenty of info:
ESP (also for xover circuits and controlers) http://sound.westhost.com/index.html
More Sub stuff http://www.diysubwoofers.org/
Great sub drivers - Dayton Titanic http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&DID=7&WebPage_ID=3&manufacturer=47&sm=1&so=1

PartsExpress also sell some nice "plate amps" which you can easily build into the same box as your speaker.

There are plenty more, all depends on what you want at the end of the day and with what amp you are going to drive them.

Also just do a search on the web for "subwoofer project" for instance, you will find plenty more info. Other advice I can give you, 1st do a sealed box design (no vents or passive radiators), they are easier then the others.
Good luck and enjoy ;)
