technics su-g 91 mute - how to un-mute

This seemed to be a common problem on fixya.com. So thought I post here too.
Technics su-g 91 had mute light on in the display, and obviously made no sound.
The remote was long lost.
The mute button is not there on the face of the receiver.

The way I got my mute off was to turn the volume down to 0 to -80 db if I recall. Then it just went off.
