Can such a rectifier circuit be built? How is the result?

This is interesting cause indeed you can use the NPN and PNP junctions in a transistor for rectification purposes, however the VBE junction will zener at 7V or so.

If you want something special to rectify, i suggest looking at the LT4320.

No, the base current will saturate the transistor causing a short on the transformer.
