Help Please-
Any idea why the battery pack would get hot when running on ac adapter? I’ve buggered up something but can’t figure it out.
from your image, i can see that circuit have 2 optional power sources...
1. battery 2. dc adapter
if you put 2 power sources at same time, you will getting battery source getting hot because your dc adapter acts like giving circuit power source for turning on amplifier and charging your batteries too
that's why your battery getting hot
other solution is changing your ordinary battery into rechargeable battery or putting a small diode like 1N4007 at the positive cable in your battery before entering circuit

Non-rechargeable cells should not be charged at all. A diode may prevent this.
This is the correct aswer. I would add the clarifying statement that in the situation shown the batteries are charged very probably. And that the diode should be in series with the battery, anode to battery +, cathode to the switch.
