Any idea why the battery pack would get hot when running on ac adapter? I’ve buggered up something but can’t figure it out.

Rechargeable cells need to be charged carefully, or they may overheat.

Non-rechargeable cells should not be charged at all. A diode may prevent this.

from your image, i can see that circuit have 2 optional power sources...
1. battery 2. dc adapter
if you put 2 power sources at same time, you will getting battery source getting hot because your dc adapter acts like giving circuit power source for turning on amplifier and charging your batteries too
that's why your battery getting hot
other solution is changing your ordinary battery into rechargeable battery or putting a small diode like 1N4007 at the positive cable in your battery before entering circuit

Hi,
Two thing to look for.
One - Make sure that the wall charger output it is DC not AC.
Two - Make sure that the voltage output it is adequate for the battery pack. Too high voltage may caused the battery temperature to raise up.

This is the correct aswer. I would add the clarifying statement that in the situation shown the batteries are charged very probably. And that the diode should be in series with the battery, anode to battery +, cathode to the switch.

it appears there is a dc jack on the amp board most have a switch that defaults to battery when the plug is removed but you wired in a different connector and paralleled the battery (you could change your toggle switch to a SPDT to prevent that)

prezden, can you confirm the battery model/type you are trying to charge - they look like common alkaline non-rechargeable battery cells.

These alkaline dry cells, labelled 'Energizer', definitely aren't recharchable. By having a close look at them, you surely will read the manufacturer's warning to do so.

What is wrong with the switch on the DC jack socket? It should be used to stop any current flowing into the alkaline dry cells. They are not the rechargeable type!

from the look of things in the picture the only thing the switch will do is cut power to the board, the adapter is in parallel to the battery.
