I'm looking for suitable parts for a prototype project. The digital side is all 3.3v powered. I have a 15v power inlet (it's coming over a cat5 connection a la 'power over ethernet').
TI make some nice looking chips such as: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps62175.pdf
However these look very tricky to prototype with due to the pads being under the chip.
Does anyone know of devices that are a bit more DIY-friendly? I'd like to use a switch-mode supply for efficiency reasons, this is for a digital application.

We have used TPS5410 on a project at work where a small PCB real estate regulator was required.

LM2575 are also worth a look.

They look nice - £4 from Farnell. TPS5410D - TEXAS INSTRUMENTS - IC, VOLTAGE REGULATOR, 500KHZ, SOIC-8 | Farnell element14
Any other mfr's worth looking at e.g. Linear Technology?

Linear Tech is always worth a look not least for the quality of their support materials. Mouser doesn't stock them though I think Digikey does.
