Acoustat had a model with built-in direct coupled output transformerless high voltage sweep tube amplifiers.

Most of ESL panels required PP signal. Acoustat amplifiers same designed.
Final Sound inverter designed panels need single high amplitude signal with advantages and disadvantages SE amplification.

Best thing is direct drive (such as Sanders) which is certainly the way to go if you can (I used B+ of 2300 v and maybe 600-700 v-rms drive).

Next best may be the concept of the earliest Dayton-Wright ESLs. Mike Wright took a fairly ordinary audio amp circuit but with a step-up transformer, not the usual step-down kind with 4-8-16 Ohm secondary.

I've now around 1950V plate with OPT as inductive load. Didn't measure yet how much signal swing is with full open input.
