I have seen some mfrs rec’d adding a second pair of speakers mounted upside down and on top of main speakers, is that in general a good idea for better sound, bigger sound, less distortion, or is it just a nother way of selling more speakers? 
Sure, I've seen it done in the past by various experimenters (even I would do this if all I had were 4 identical speakers!), but which manufacturer is actually recommending this?
Is OP referring to Atmos speakers perhaps?
If so, they're only used for giving specific spatial effects to things like movie soundtracks, not everyday music listening AFAIK.

But somebody doing something to get attention at a show is not exactly a manufacturer recommendation.
And of course, double Advents. They magically became good speakers if you used two pairs.
