Using two cabs per side, in a non array? (live sound)

As I consider my next "tops" build, (to go with subs crossed at 100 Hz) I'm liking a few designs that are going to be extremely marginal, output-wise, in a large room & of course outdoors.

This is just for "bar band" and "event DJ" use, but sometimes you need to vibrate things a bit. Plus, distortion can be pretty bad when you're right at the edge.

Everyone says "small arrays" are a bad idea. OK< I won't try to argue.

So what's the deal with point-source speakers per side, when they have horns in the neighborhood of 70 - 90 degrees, horizontal? Does the phase smear get so bad that you want to run screaming from the event, or is it just a minor tradeoff?

Am I better off building a pair, with horns I can pound the snot out of, but maybe sound a little harsh at low volume?
