improvement?
You have a boost towards lower frequencies due to room gain but I would not say it is an improvement putting the speakers in the corners.
The reason for room gain is twofold. One is "spatial loading" (see link) the other is reflection.
Depending on frequency and position of the speaker in the room, the gain can be significantly.

BUT:
This way all the room modes (resonant frequencies) getting most excited. This modes usually have a long decay time (ringing) and this sounds not so good (better try to avoid exciting room modes).
Some constructions though benefit from placing the woofers near the floor and can lead to flatter frequency response in the "upper" bass range (~100-300Hz) as this position compensates for baffle step drop of SPL.
Regarding room modes the position near the floor is not so bad compared to corner placement. The worst You can do (IMO) is placing the woofers near the floor AND in the corners.
