Sorry to hear that he passed. Even though we know him for his early work on amplifiers, he had a very influential career in Finland after that early work in audio.
I met him in the late 1990s when I was one of the organizers of a well known conference on semiconductor devices - the International Electron Devices Meeting or IEDM. That conference has a tradition of having 3 plenary talks at the start of the conference - one each from Europe, US, and Asia. At the time, mobile phone technology was experiencing rapid evolution and sales were growing exponentially. So we were very interested in hearing about the technology needs of the mobile phone industry. The European members of the organizing committee described Otala as "the father of the Finnish mobile phone industry" and a key figure behind the success of Nokia. At the time and until the appearance of the iphone in 2007, Nokia was the dominant player in the cell phone industry. We were hoping that we'd find a speaker to talk about the trends in cell phone design and how the underlying technology needed to evolve to meet the unique needs of mobile phones. But that wasn't the talk that he wanted to give. He was no longer working at Nokia and was instead working as a Professor at Tampere University. His talk was about "Intercontinental migration of dominant technologies" and how the creators of technology such as watches, cameras, and personal computers had all seen the manufacturing and most of the business migrate from Europe or the US to low cost manufacturing in other parts of the world - primarily Asia. He then talked about the emergence of smart cards and mobile communication technology and the actions Europe was taking to prevent a similar loss of those industries.
When he gave the talk, I was slightly disappointed because it was more about macroeconomic trends and less about the technology of phones. But looking back, he was worrying about really important trends, and he was quite prescient to be worried about these things. When he gave the talk, Nokia was the dominant mobile phone company in the world. The next decade and half saw Nokia's phone business practically destroyed, mainly by the creation of the smart phone by Apple followed by the low cost Android phones. He clearly was a big thinker who worried about important problems. May he rest in peace.
