Is there a special tool you can use to get a nice round strain relief on the basic 3.5mm connector? Item 3 below.
I have tried pliers but it's hit and miss. Frustrating and even harder with thick wire. Easy to pierce the insulation if not lucky. Tends to give all at once. There must be a special and better way.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hi,
After soldering it all up and correctly crimping 3, add a knot
to the cable behind 3. If the hole in the cover is quite large
add a washer to the cable before connecting it up.
You could also try 2 washers, 3 then a washer, knot, washer.
Another option is to loop the cable around 3. That is 3 crimps
2 sections of cable, with one section going round it as a loop.
Or try combinng both the the above options.
rgds, sreten.
Good plugs have a collet behind 3 that grips the cable.

Use a crimp tool that has the correct size head for the cable. See Crimp Tools - Hand | Farnell element14
I expect Mouser have a good range as well.
I use a tool designed for Ethernet cabling.
