"Sticky" e-mail notifier?

The last response into my mailbox has been notified by the notifier. And does not disappear not matter how often I read this.

Right on top of the screen "your notifications" show "1" indicating one unread message. This refers to the last message from JMFahey sent 26. July and does not disappear no matter how often I read that. Never had this issue before. I assume this may relate to the fact that this message contains just a smiley and no text at all.

A funny story, at times I've opened a large amount of tabs when I've had PMs, and after I read them I still see the notification when I switch to the new tabs.
