The Infinite Improbability Audio Rack

Hi All,
I had the necessity of a bigger audio rack for my setup, wich now includes a 4U/400 Dissipante from Hifi2000. Since I have almost zero carpentry skills, I needed a simple project but the result had to be a sturdy cabinet, since the power amp is very heavy and I needed at least 4 shelves...

And it had to be a quick project, as I have gear everywhere, faster than a warp engine...

Thanks to the plans sent to me by Syrius Cybernetics Corporation :D I had a way to proceed!!!

Yes, It’s time for an Infinite Improbability Drive Rack!

So, I bought some Marine Pine Plywood (or, if you prefer, Military Pangalactic Police) in form of 60X50cm boards, I used some aluminium tubes oxidized with caustic soda that I had from a previous project (something with Impulse Drive Engine :snail: ), M8 threaded rods, washers and nuts. Obviously the golden drive had to be stolen using robots… :D

With a Point Of View Gun on hand, I started the build!

I made some wooden discs with the internal diameter of the tubes...

...holes in plywood for the threaded rods...

...and glued 'em to the shelves

In order to glue the discs centered, I used a M8 bolt for each hole

Upper shelf: discs only on bottom, middle shelves: on both sides, bottom shelf: only on top

Simply oiled with Masgarrudhanishoppenhers Extract (that terrestrials call "boiled linseed oil")

Once dried, I prepared the threaded rods, adding a through nut and an adjustable foot

Once in place...

...I put onthe bottom shelf the first tubes

I built something along these line many years ago, but only using 9mm (3/8") threaded rods for the four legs (not with your fancy tubes). Its tedious but this design allows the shelves to be adjustable. I needed to put up and take down the rack in a hurry, so I slotted each piece of 2'x2' plywood so that after I loosened all the nuts above and below all the shelves I could slide out the plywood pieces. Large "fender washers" between the nuts and shelves provided good stiffness and stability. This made it quick to put up and take down, relatively speaking, at least for the simplicity of the design. The adjustability of the shelving meant I could reconfigure the rack at will, for example into a sofa, a potted plant, a sperm whale, or a bunch of yarn, etc. You get the idea.

Almost the same thing here...given the spacing can be infinitely adjustable, it worked great & takes up very little floorspace.

Just a question..... When you place all of your hifi gear on this on this rack and push on the top shelf "finger on the front edge of the plywood on the far right or left does it twist? As in clockwise or counter clockwise depending on which side you
pressed. "Torsional Rigidity" That is a big old word for a Louisiana Boy:cool:
