Active cancellation limitations

It is practically impossible to implement effective cancellation for a noise source radiating somewhat broadband (60-8000kHz) noise into a confined space. Reflections from walls and objects within the room cause sound to arrive at varying phase depending on your location in the room, the frequencies generated and the the reflectivity of the surfaces within the shop. This compromises the predictive algorithms used in active noise cancellation systems, dramatically reducing their effectiveness. Isolating the dust collector and listener into separate rooms/chambers is required to achieve meaningful noise reduction.

Passive isolation headphones provide ~ 25 dB attenuation. Active noise-cancelling headphones provide similar performance, and allow playback of audio as well (although the quality is undermined when the dust collection is on).

As said: headphones. $13 ones are fine. Also move the motor outside. However the air velocity at the pickup points -must- be a large fraction of the speed of sound, so will make much broadband noise where you are making dust.
