Hello all
my berco variac was tripping the mains so I looked inside and saw a broken winding.

It looks like someone has tried before with the side repair

Is this something that can be repaired?

I'd attempt repair--- what's to lose?

Does the breaker trip with the slider at 0? Can you watch for "smoke" as you apply power? Is it obvious that there's not some problem in the wiring in the connection to the mains? As a sanity check, you could try removing the connection to the top of the variac and reapplying power to confirm the issue is, in fact, the magnetics and not some hidden problem with the power cord. I would think if only two adjacent turns were shorted (i.e. only one shorted turn), there might be heat generated, but not enough to trip the breaker.

If you're not a not DIYer, you could inquire at at motor rewind shop.

Good luck!
