Hi all, need some help with someone who has fixed Marantz 54 before.
1. As soon as power is applied CD motor starts to spin and doesn't stop until power is killed.
2. all led's at front panel including 7 segments are lit all the time.
Work done so far below but no luck.
1. Power supply caps replaced with new ones with same value.
Power rails/regulator looks all good.
2. CDM1 has new caps 33uf/16v
3. Laser not lit.
Suspect SAA7000 chip but I don't have a spare to try.
Any clues?

Looks like there may be a service manual for it out there on the net. Sounds like some systematic troubleshooting from a schematic might be helpful at some point?
That's a very old CD player. Unless you just enjoy fixing things, you may be better off letting it go and get a new or newer disc player. Disc player sound quality is excellent these days even at entry level.Marantz 54
I think the Marantz CD54 is a Philips CD104 in disguise.
If so, search on here for CD104 and you'll find all you need to know.
Look at the 'Griplets'.

At this point I have accepted challenge and dig further down. I spent almost 3 days studying the circuit diagram. I enjoy fixing and get very irritated I can't figure it out what is wrong with digital circuit 🙂
May be midlife crisis hitting hard. 🙂

Not as excellent as the sound quality of this player. I would try to fix it at all costs.
That's interesting. Please share the method for figuring that out.Not as excellent as the sound quality of this player.
I am in love with TDA chips 🙂
After trying Abbas Audio 2.2 DAC with TDA1541A S1 chip I have started to believe things has gone backwards over time. I like to fix CD 54 or CD 74 and try by myself before I conclude newer plastic CD players would perform better. I doubt. They did something very right back in days.

Oh, I dunno. Its possible to get world class sound quality out of AK4499. Its just that nobody has brought a solution to market that really exploits what it is capable of. Given the AKM plant fire, it may be some time before anyone does.
I have compared DACs in old players. The advancement of DAC technology has concerned ease of manufacturing not qualitative progress. The first is still the best.
How many modern, highly-rated $5,000 dacs have you compared to an old CD player? To me, the problem is that good measurements are reasonably easy to get, but do not fully correlate with what is heard. DACs that do everything superbly, measure well and sound very exceptionally good, still cost far too much for most people. Its just not considered as important as having a car to drive, or something like that.
Every level matched double blind listening test I've read about show no audible difference between expensive and cheap contemporary DACs.DACs that do everything superbly, measure well and sound very exceptionally good, still cost far too much for most people.

None. Modern, highly-rated $5,000 dacs employ the wrong technique and the wrong architecture and exhibit too high accuracy (!)

I agree. In terms of measurement data, the TDA1540 must appear to be a disaster while it shines as a performer.
(This is not the answer you expected, right?)
N101N,
Thanks for the reply. May I ask what you mean by the term "too high accuracy?"
Also, are you including DSD performance at all? What about DSD256? Still "too high accuracy?"

Markw4,
I was pejoratively referring to the irksome clock accuracy race assumed to be the salvation from jitter. Achieving high accuracy (in timing, sampling) has a price. I am not fond of high operating frequencies.
poynton,
can you give the thread starter assistance? (Instead of complaining).

1.) Recheck
2) Recheck polarity
3) SAA700 available from EBAY
I don't know where you are as you have not put it on your profile.
As the SAA7000 is not a popular chip. most on EBAY will be genuine.
