Hi, I have unearthed my old HHB Portadisc and want to record some old cd audio with it. I assume I should use the XLR input and so will need an XLR/jack (that fits into headphone sockets). So, is this right? If so what would I look for when buying? If I should be using some other input (coaxial?) please advise.

Looks like the XLRs take balanced line in. Is your CD player balanced out? Probably not..
The cheap and dirty way is to connect the shield to XLR pins 1&3 (G & Return), signal core to pin 2 (line). Hopefully you'll have enough gain, otherwise switch from line to mic.
