Currently looking into either converting an old G4 Mac (very quiet) with a DVD/CD drive into a high quality transport. The G4 that I have can output Optical and is also USB capable. Just wondering how would those who have tried this, compare the sound quality of such a setup, with the optical and/or USB being mated to a high quality DIY DAC (WM4870/AD1855/etc), as compared to a CD player that has the same DAC?
I am aware that I can also use this to rip the CD into FLAC or other format, and then play through as well, however, when considered as a CD player only option, what are the benefits and negatives?
