Also an X86 thin client with USB to XMOS to I2S out.
What limitations, if any, would be incurred using either of the switches linked below to connect both players to the one dac..?
(SQ..? DSD capability ...?)

Looks like one or the other should be okay to do what you need. The first one uses a high power CMOS digital switch IC like this: https://assets.nexperia.com/documents/data-sheet/74HC_HCT157.pdf
That should give you some idea of how it works. The only issue might be if different units you are trying to connect together with the switch run at different voltages. If some are 3.3v digital and some 5v, then you would probably want to check to make sure you know whether any complications might occur. Mostly, everything seems to run at 3.3v these days so probably no issues with that.
