I recently built a DIY CNC machine so thought I'd make a new enclosure for my SMPS400 and UCD180s. The last enclosure I had was a somewhat ugly modushop based case.

If you are making anything with a CNC you need to start with CAD.

Here's the rear panel. Took me a while to get OK results like this from the CNC machine. It's a lot to learn!

This was my first attempt at 3D contour machining. Not perfect but I think it worked out well for a first go.

This will be for a recessed power switch.

awesome !

Thanks.

I made a mistake and put the recessed power switch too close to the edge of the enclosure. I wanted to have no screws on the front for a clean look but now I can't use a bracket and blind tapped thread to attach the front. The thread tapped hole will go into the switch recess and be visible. So I decided to put the 3 countersunk screws on the front matching the rear. It looks a bit too industrial for my tastes but not too bad I guess.

What are the side extrusions you are using?

Ahh, I forgot to mention this! It's perhaps the most important part.

It's 2060 extrusion. You can buy it at many places. I really like it. I bought mine from Aliexpress where many sellers will cut custom lengths.

It's a great thing to build things from because it's relatively cheap, you can tap an M6 thread into the ends and there's many brackets and attachments available specifically for the whole family of 20xx extrusions.

Here's some examples of the brackets/attachments that you can buy.

Finished it today.

I wanted to some how make the status LEDs from the UCD modules visible from the outside to show when they are powered up (there's 2 LED colours per module). I was thinking of using a light pipe to bring it to the front panel but couldn't really get this working in an elegant way. So I just CNC'd a couple of small windows for the top panel instead :)
