Tight space in enclosure: vertically mounted trafo?

I assume you are using a toroidal transformer. The leakage fields of your transformer will interact slightly differently with the amp circuitry, but I doubt you'll be able to detect much of a difference. In fact I remember seeing a National Semiconductor application note where they mounted the toroidal transformers vertically to save space. The measured performance of the amp was top notch. It might have been one of the app notes for the LM4702 but I don't remember exactly.

With an E-I core transformer, on the other hand, orientation does matter as its leakage fields are much stronger and more directional.
