This is how this thing should be looking like with a proper transformer...I'll make it again for the LT1638 version too.

I finished now both schematic versions of the power supplies with the transformer that hopefully would solve all of my problems.I don't know if i can get it as a commercial product so most probably I'll have to wind it myself. Some of the values would need some tweaking and fine calculation or simulation, but the basic schematic should be good enough.

I chose the 20vdc supply just because i have lots of unused IBM and Dell laptop chargers and because of the efficiency vs safety reasons.

As usual I forgot the fuse and the reversed voltage protection diode on the input and i thought that i should also add a very simple delay for the high voltage supply switch ON. I just copied one that i found somewhere on this forum. So i have a slow start for the filament and when the filament voltage reaches about 4.6v, the relay timer will start it's own countdown .The relay is a smd double relay(modem-tel) so that i can put it's contacts in series and lower the contacts stress although the relays are for a maximum of 110vdc-2amps while i have 140...250vdc but less than 50mA surge at any moment.
