My old Yamaha YST-SW011 subwoofer makes this rattling/crackling noise and I'm not sure why. To me, it sounds like a loose object inside the cabinet but I've verified that that is not the case. I've attached a video of the noise (hopefully it's playable).

Your sound clip lasts for only 4 s. I can hear the bass tone clearly, but the unwanted noise is not clear or sharply defined.

The front and rear suspensions of the downward firing woofer cone may have weakened over time due to the constant pull of gravity on the cone, causing it to sag. This could cause mechanical noise due to the voice coil former vibrating beyond its normal limits.
Try turning the entire sub enclosure upside down to see what happens to the unwanted noise.
