Hi,
I'm looking for some OPTs for 45s or 300Bs. I'm thinking like 5k primaries, even if at 300B levels of current, and I'd really like something with 4 and 8 ohm taps. Ideally, a Magnequest FS-030, Electraprint with 4 and 8 ohm taps, Tango XE-20S, Monolith S-11, James JS-6123, etc. But if you've got anything neat, I'll listen, even if it is less illustrious. But no boring Hammond or Edcor.
I'd also be interested in an appropriate PT for a TSE-II. I've got at least one choke possibility in my box of iron, but if you've got something pretty that matches an iron set, lmk.
This is a feeler and a long shot, but I'm trying to prioritize projects without adding more iron to my transformer box that is full and nearly impossible to move. So, trade possibilities include:
1) One of two pairs of PTs that would work for 845s or other high voltage, high current monos. I probably won't part with both.
2) A full Acrosound iron set from Allen 75 amplifiers. These are giant, matched, "square" can Acrosound outputs for 6550 push pull amps with matching PTs and chokes (LC/swingers) for monoblocks. TO-330 size, but a bit different impedance. Not the less desirable later Allen Acros or other makers for these amps. Rare to find a matching pair.
3) I've got a full two chassis 845 SET amp that should work but doesn't quite (nasty hum, all new caps, probably a wiring error on my part). The OPTs are AES/Cary 805s (845/211). So, lowish primary impedance for 845s, probably around 6k, but giant potted transformers that can take an 845 driven into A2. If you want a 50 watt set amp, this is your pony. Gas tube rectified B+. A ridiculous creature. BUT in addition to the hum, I doubt it will ship well. The Hammond aluminum chassis are overtaxed just sitting on a shelf. So, despite all the value, that's why I think of this as parts. I don't want to take this apart, but I'd pack it tight as long as you understand it is risky. Or come pick it up if you are near Denver.
4) If you want just the power supply for the 845 amp, that is maybe my favorite option. I strongly suspect that at least for 845s in A1, you'd get better results with things from Monolith or Silk in a more modest package than these giant, horizontal, 50W capable AES OPTs. I'd have to look, but I'm thinking its something like a 950V B+ (again, gas tube rectified, and its CLCLCRC), bias supply (tube rectified), 6.3V supply (maybe even DC), and two 10V supplies (DC, IIRC). A giant, shielded umbilical made with wind turbine cable and monster mil spec connectors.
In addition to needing smaller OPTs, part of my issue is that I have a pair of old Mac computer chassis and I'm torn between making them into 845 SET monos, 845 PP monos, and 6550 monos with the Acro iron. But it can't be all of them; I don't want to have MORE giant computer chassis in the garage; and I don't have matching bits for any aspect of the current 845 amp PS (other than the first choke ....)
If you aren't fairly experienced, I caution against considering the 845/211 stuff. I probably shouldn't be playing with these voltages.
I'd entertain cash going whichever way and in whatever amount makes sense. This is heavy stuff, so shipping would be cost prohibitive for some people and some locations.
I've got too many projects and am in no hurry. So, if you find this thread in four years, don't hesitate to hit me up.
Paul
