Here the "bank holiday" as it is called for some (boring) reason is celebrated by getting into your car and sitting in a traffic jam with everyone else. It is such an important tradition that even retired people will do this.
Even if you're out of work, you can work on yourself and become a better person. Technically, you're the employer and employee at once. You can add that to your CV as the most important experience of your life.

I was too busy working. Around the house (retired). Too dumb (smart?) to sit in a car in a Welch traffic jam.
I think it's called bank holiday here because even the banks are closed (shock horror, they must really mean it!)

It was the way the gov. enforced worker's holidays by closing the banks so no commerce was possible.
Being a nosy bugger I looked up bank holiday on wiki.
It's more historical than political really.
The Bank of England had always observed (by closing) 33 saint's days but at some point this was reduced to just four: May Day, Good Friday, All Saints and Christmas Day.
Some 40 years later an ex-banker becomes prime minister and introduces those very 4 days as national holidays.
