Hi,
Last week I built a pair of seales speakers with one Tangband W3-871S each. They sound marvelous! I really like them but they lack in the lower frequencies.
I could build a vented speaker with them ofcourse but I'm affraid it will exceed the xmax way too soon then.
Do you perhaps have a suggestion of a 5"/6.5" woofer to match them nicely?
I do live in the Netherlands, so Radioshack/Dayton isn't really a possibility for me. I will have to stick to the major brands here.. (Visaton, Vifa, Peerless etc)
Also (yeah I'm picky 😛) I would like not to exceed the 30liters (+/- 1.05 cubic feet) and spend way over 50 Euro's on each driver.
Thanks for your help 🙂

Peerless offers low priced drivers and they are leaders in bass application. I guess a pair of 6.5'' woof would be more than enough to match those TB you got there....
I agree with Guss. Peerless is the leader when it comes to accurate and powerful bass in moderate-sized enclosures, and their Classic 5" and 6-1/2" woofers should be more than adequate at a good, low price.
Good luck. (And be sure to post your listening impressions with the woofers set up.)🙂

Wow.. thanks 😀
I'll have a look at what Peerless has to offer to me 🙂
The Tangband can take it down to 115-120 or so.. so the woofers only have to play from maybe.. 130/150 and down? The midrange really isn't important here. (well offcourse it is, but its taken care of 😉)
The units in my range are:
- CSC 145 G (54 euro)
- CSC 176 H (56 euro)
- CSX 145 H (56 euro)
Seas is above my budget..
Why is everything so expensive in the Netherlands? 🙁
Any comments on Visaton? The W130S and W170S are pretty affordable.
Thanks for all the feedback!
by the way.. would you recommend a 6,5" of a lower series or a 5" of a higher series?

Definitively the 6.5inch

Again, I'd agree with Guss and would recommend the 6.5" over the 5" just for its better bass performance. Heck, I'd recommend a Peerless 8" model, that is if you don't mind it being slightly "slower" than the 6.5" and occupy more space.
Best of luck to you.
First of all, there might be a slight delay 🙁 My receiver's left pre-amp is broken (digital connection works great, but with analog/radio the left speaker doesnt work) so it will have to go back to Marantz I'm affraid
Second, I found this woofer:
http://www.intertechnik.de/user/10102/articles/1345058.html
It can be used in a 25 liter BR-housing and will have a -3dB of 35Hz!! And maybe I can get them for only 37 euro each 😀
Too bad they're 4Ohm, so not very suitable for playing on a tube amp 🙁 (don't have one.. but just in case 😉)

Bonsoir Razorfist,
These TBs look really good. Would you mind sharing the construction details with a newbie ? I want to start with a small speaker in order to experiment a bit before I try something bigger.
I have been thinking about the Alegria Isa for a while but the sonotube thing on the insade of the cabinet worries me. I don't know why but I'd prefer something with 3 drivers instead of 4.
If someone in this forum with the knowledge required for this job would help me figure out how to do this in a regular "needle" box (ie without the sonotube inside) I would really appreciate it.
I guess I would need some kind of electronics to help with the baffle step. Help with this would also be very welcome.
I know everyone has already mentioned a bunch of big-budget drivers that probably sound ok but for a smaller option have you considered using some of the Tang Band mini "subwoofers"? the 5" which is carried by Parts Express has 5mm of Xmax. That's 10mm p-p. they also handle the power well enough - 50w RMS and 100w Max
They have big magnets, and venting under the spider, and vented pole pieces, and thick cones and tough dust caps and double-rolled rubber surrounds.
The 5" unit stops at 50 Hz and the 4" unit stops at 55 Hz. The 4" unit has 3mm of Xmax, but its low response is surprising for a 4" driver.

hee razorfist, waar heb je die tangband vandaan? ik ben er al een tijdje naar opzoek en kan hem niet in nederland vinden.
[translation 😉 : hey razorfist, where did you get that tangband? i've been searching for it a while and can't find it in the netherlands]

Hi, built these: Halfway down the page because they are easy to build, and they are also my first project 🙂
Construction details aren't really complicated 😀 I went to a local DIY shop and had 18mm MDF (3/4") sawed into the right sizes for me. Then I put them together with a nice amount of fast-drying wood-glue and some clamps.
The holes for the units were made with a circle-jig and a router.
For dampening, I bought a sheet of BAF (dacron, artificial wool) and glued some to all the sides so it was almost filled.
It doesn't include any baffle step compensation. Only a notch filter to take away a bump in the middle frequencies.
For more easy to construct needles, you could take a look at the "spires" from Creativesound.ca
I bought them at spectrumaudio.dematjans said:hee razorfist, waar heb je die tangband vandaan? ik ben er al een tijdje naar opzoek en kan hem niet in nederland vinden.

You pay way more then you would in the US, but I only needed 2 and could split the shipping with someone else who needed stuff from that store. You could ask the US stores what they charge for shipping.
Later I bought a couple of W3-881S from Partsexpress, and their shipping was certainly reasonable! 🙂
BAM:
Thanks for the tip, I will look in to it 🙂
Problem is that I live in the Netherlands so shipping will be high (especially for heavy units 😉)
Heeej Razorfist,
The MDS08 is really a good unit for low frequencies.
It'll do 56 Hz in a 14 L box. For lower: put it in a 25 L bassreflex with a 7cm dia/44cm long or 5cm dia/21.3cm long port.
Another possibility (almost €60 each) is the Alcone AC 6.5 HE.
in a 27.5 L box (5cm dia/7.6cm long port) it goes down to about 48 Hz.
Grtz, Joris

What are the chances...
I wast _just_ looking for a woofer to go with the TB 871's I am planning to use to build a nice little pair of speakers for my sister.
I've already got a nice old Marantz (1060) for 50 euros.
Also: I too live in The Netherlands and am planning to get the TB's from Spectrumaudio (GER).
Since I really am on a budget (since it's not for me) I was looking for woofers that are in the same price-range as the TB's. I mean: you can't really justify expensive woofers if your full-rangers are just 22,50 euro the piece, right?
As for the remark on: bigger equals slower (in the context of 8" vs. 6,5" for woofers): that is just a damnable lie. For people who spread lies, please read http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26230, and stop lying afterwards.
Going ontopic:
The TB's have a rather high QTS (0,59 ; or did someone measure differently?). This makes it quite suitable for open baffle, which also aligns with my plan to do an easy-to-built and good-sounding project.
Considering open baffle: a nice open baffle woofer would make an ever nicer plan.
Also: I like my woofers to be big and bad (low efficient small drivers doing bass are like trucks on a chicane). Specs like 12"/99db/20g-mms (Supravox 285 GMF) or 15"/100db/60g-mms (BD-Design BD15) are music to my ears.
So: a match with the low xmas, 88db TB's that should be as big and bad as possible, are suitable for open baffle and are highly restricted in cost is the target, and these are my finding:
Gradient W 210 - 8 ohms
http://www.boxy-lautsprecher.de/index.html?target=p_1849.html&lang=de
Price: 18 euro a piece
http://www.speakerenco.nl/folder.pdf
The box-design, which isn't a box but just a piece of straight wood with diameter ~ 0.80 x 0.60 m (or maybe split into 2x2 pieces: the fullranger-pieces on ear-level and the woofer-pieces above ; yes, the place is also very restricted ;-) )
Almost forgot: for cross-over: either a 1st order @ 300 hz or a little more-order @ 500 - 700 hz (don't want those woofers' 4 khz' peaks ruining things and also want to be able to play pretty loud with these mini-TB's whilst keeping the wide range); and both with a little resistance on the TB (the woofer only does <85 db @ < 100 hz).

I did mention that an 8" is slightly "slower" than a 6.5" assuming similar construction, materials, etc. (i.e. from the same series) Please do not say people are lying when you have not read carefully, and the link you posted says nothing.

Would it be to balance out the fact that you have really good, really cheap (relative to the rest of the world) legal cannabis there?
Nielsio said:If the link says nothing to you, then there's no point going into discussion with you.
It says nothing to me because I have my ethics and have not lied. I still think that there is a perceivable difference in "speed" between a 6.5" and a similar 8" unit; that is why I am considering using multiple (four?) 6.5" woofers together as a subwoofer. Have you ever tried listening to a 6.5" and an 8" from the same series?
