Why does Mouser put random parts in bubble wrap?

Got some resistors today. These two are identical parts that just differ in 3.8kohms. Both are loose packed. One pair they put in bubble wrap, other pair not. Not mad, just like, why?

Or resistors in ESD safe bags. Why?! Also, sometimes bags inside bags, randomly.

Some parts like semis need extra care when put in packaging, I get that.
But I'd like to see an option along the lines of "Use as little packaging material as possible". Ordering electronic parts, not only from mouser, always results in flood of plastic waste.

Some companies pack everything in ESD safe stuff. That makes some sense; it simplifies their logistics and officially you are not allowed to have any non-conductive plastic at a static-free workstation, so wrapping everything in ESD safe bags has the advantage that you can just unpack everything at the static-free workstation. (You still have to remove it from the cardboard box elsewhere, as cardboard and paper also aren't considered ESD safe.)

Anyway, that's not what Mouser does.

My last order from farnell had some mosfets. 10 of them were in a sleeve, and the other 2 were in a little cardboard box that they normally put opamps in to. It must be just how they come off their storage or something. Different picking machines with different bagging or something.

When I order parts from Mouser, some are inexplicably "freight free". I always try to find some trival component that ships 'freight free' to get out of paying freight on the parts I actually want. Which makes me think... maybe Mouser's suppliers say: "there's free bubble wrap with that"!!

Mouser story...

Towards the end of December '21 I ordered some parts, couple caps and some resistors. The package made it from Texas to the fedex facility in Köln, Germany in under 36 hours. There it got lost. I contacted both fedex and mouser, they said they would look into the issue. The package was deemed lost and I got issued a refund.
Last week I suddenly get an update on the package's tracking. For some reason it turned up in Algiers DZ, of all places. Destination was listed as mouser, since the package was to be returned.
Two days later ist got delivered at my office, guess it was too much hassle to send it back over the Atlantic. I open the package, half the parts are missing, and the ones that are there are randomly packed in little boxes, ESD safe bags, or ziplocks :/
Altogether confusing, but good customer service, even for small fish like us hobbyists. 10/10 would shop again.

And I've always wondered about the "freight free" items. Good to know...

I much suspect your package was opened somewhere along its path , (looking for drugs?), every single case/bag/whatever was angrily cut open with a box cutter and contents shaken on a table.

After nothing was found, parts were randomly repacked and reshipped.

NO WAY it left Mouser in that shape.

I almost forgot about the time I bought $800 worth of 100 SOIC8 opamps from Verical. I receveid an email notification of delivery so I opened my front door to retrieve it. Nearly had a heart attack when I saw there was nothing on the porch. Stood there panacking for a minute until I noticed a giant box sitting on my neighbors lawn. It was so ridiculously big and lightweight that it got blown off the porch by the wind.

The lost package didn't look that bad, but the whole thing was still very uncharacteristic of Mouser. In fact, it was the first time something went wrong out of the about 20 orders that I've placed with them so far.

Still haven't figured out a clear pattern in how parts are packaged though. The double bagged ones with desiccant bags are a highlight too, for a 40 cent part.

My own 84 y.o. Mother had a BAD experience at Atlanta or Houston airport (on her way to L.A) when the drug dog in full uniform (a greenish cape imprinted with DEA logo) picked her bag among hundreds and frantically jumped over it, pushing it with his paws and desperately burying his nose into it as if trying to dig a hole.

Won´t say they pointed guns at her but attitude was not far from that, to call them unkind is the understatement of the year.

They messed it, emptied everything on a table, didn´t cut through walls only because it was 1/8" fiberglass, no lining, no way to hide anything.

Of course, NO drugs, not even residual contamination.

"Ma´am (now she was "a Lady" again), could you explain why our doggie was so frantic about your luggage?"

"Oh, that ... you should have asked first!!!!! .... my female dog in heat was VERY angry at me leaving on a trip and peed all over my luggage in revenge"

Mouser definitely aren't helping the globes plastic problem. Maybe small paper bags would be better. I used to like the reasonable sized paper bags RS Components in the UK used. Made for good salad bags picking fresh from the garden!
I do use Mouser 95% of the time now. Incredible service....sometimes 4 days from order to delivery in the UK, albeit slowed down by brexit and covid of late.

You can't bend those long IC tubes.
