Why do people put speaker grill over their speakers???

Other than to discourage tiny children from poking your metal dome tweeters, is there really any reason to cover up your speakers with a grill???

We just built some swans HIVI 3.1 DIY speakers. We covered them with grills and the sound sounded different. So as a test I pulled off the grill and asked my wife to close her eyes and tell me blindly if my voice sounded differently. (I was talking through the speaker grill). She could tell every time when I was indeed speaking through the grill. This lead me to think.....these are definitely NOT truly invisible. Why would you use them???

question is....why use a speaker grill????

You used wrong cloth. Audio grills are truly transparent, even for heights.
Plenty of measurements to prove it. Sometimes the only downside of grills is the diffraction from the frame.

Would you be kind to mention afordable tranpatrent cloth. As many other things I would imagine that the same is also sold without the "audio“ designation much cheaper
Cheers!

There can be a positive effect on the sound that goes beyond the mere acoustic. Human hearing doesn't work in isolation from the other senses, but is only part of an integrated whole. In particular, if you can see an object which looks like it might be the source of a sound, your brain will automatically localize sounds to it. In other words, being able to see the drivers can affect stereo imaging.
