Other than to discourage tiny children from poking your metal dome tweeters, is there really any reason to cover up your speakers with a grill???
We just built some swans HIVI 3.1 DIY speakers. We covered them with grills and the sound sounded different. So as a test I pulled off the grill and asked my wife to close her eyes and tell me blindly if my voice sounded differently. (I was talking through the speaker grill). She could tell every time when I was indeed speaking through the grill. This lead me to think.....these are definitely NOT truly invisible. Why would you use them???
question is....why use a speaker grill????

I'm sure some of the significant others might not want to see round speakers 🙂
... yeap...
🙂
To prevent people of all ages, including teenagers and grown adults from poking your metal dome tweeters.
Dust. I have seen vintage speakers over 40 years old, with pristine membranes after removing the grill.Other than to discourage tiny children from poking your metal dome tweeters, is there really any reason to cover up your speakers with a grill???
And sunlight... UV light speeds up degradation of foam suspensions and changes the color of paper cones.

You used wrong cloth. Audio grills are truly transparent, even for heights.
Plenty of measurements to prove it. Sometimes the only downside of grills is the diffraction from the frame.
Because grills looks so good, especially those of foam
JBL re-introduced the JBL-100, or "Century" with the orange foam grill! Takes you back to the era of mini-skirts!
I have a pair of the JBL-300's -- the speaker grill cloth is akin to a polyester leisure suit's material.
As others have said: For looks, for protection, for WAF.
BTW, what did you use for fabric that your wife could so easily hear?

Would you be kind to mention afordable tranpatrent cloth. As many other things I would imagine that the same is also sold without the "audio“ designation much cheaperYou used wrong cloth. Audio grills are truly transparent, even for heights.

Cheers!
There can be a positive effect on the sound that goes beyond the mere acoustic. Human hearing doesn't work in isolation from the other senses, but is only part of an integrated whole. In particular, if you can see an object which looks like it might be the source of a sound, your brain will automatically localize sounds to it. In other words, being able to see the drivers can affect stereo imaging.
The Tygan grilles on the BBC LS3/5A influence the overall sound quality and, unlike most loudspeaker grilles, are designed to be left in place.
I've found suitable cloths by visiting my local fabric shop.Would you be kind to mention afordable tranpatrent cloth.
Compare cloths by holding them up to the light.
If you can see clearly through the cloth, you'll be able to hear clearly through it.
Was she in the kitchen at the time? hehe
yes in fact making me a sandwich 😛
good answers guys. So far the only reason I would keep them is due to UV light exposure from the sun deteriorating my drivers. buuuuuuut isn't all UV light filtered out by the windows in my house??
