Dear Forum Members,

I am trying to decide between the "LCD projection panel on an OHP" setup and the "LCD TV module inside an art projector" setup. I am willing to spend money to get the best parts. Which type of setup offers better picture quality? Thanks a lot.

The image quality depends on two things.

Brightness of the image
Resolution/Quality of the LCD panel

Generally if you use a smaller panel (6" or less) you're not going to find them at a decent price at a resolution above 320x240 (maybe 400x240 if you find them in that wierd aspect ratio thing).

If you want a quick, easy, good projector and you don't care how clunky it is, go for the OHP and overlay projection panel. If you're willing to spend up to $300 or more, you can find a 800x600 or maybe even 1024x768 overhead projection panel. If you spend $100-$200, you can easily find a quality 640x480 projection panel which is plenty good for most people (including myself).

The only advantage to building your own is you get to customize it as far as size and brightness goes, but it's hard to get good quality.

If you want REALLY good quality, what some people are finding success with is buying a cheap 15 inch flat-panel LCD computer monitor, taking off the backlight and housing, and mounting that on an overhead projector. It's an easy way to get 1024x768 resolution for $250. Just be careful about the ribbon cables as I've heard of more people ripping them and damaging them than people who have kept them intact.
