Hi all, I have a pair of Zu druids and am looking to buy a first watt amp to drive them..Anyone have any recommendations as to which one to go for? I was thinking of a F1 or F2 but keen for other thoughts.
thanks!

A friend of mine is driving them with F4's, driven in turn by some
300B SET amps. He seemed very happy until he heard the latest
upcoming design.

Does this infer that I would be wise to leave the task of building your F5 until a later date?😉 Or is that latest upcoming design not to be for DIY?
No, build the F5--it is a great amp. Just build a really nice chasis in case you want to swap out amp boards in the future.

I am assuming that Nelson doesn't spend his time working on a newer, but crummy sounding design. So, if you wait for the next great release, you will never build an amp until Nelson retires.

This is very true to many a Pass DIY'er.
What is interesting, is that you frequently see people go back to the older NP designs, to pick ideas for whatever they decide to build.
I once built a stock Zen, using the official boards and all, but since then I have seen the designs as an education/inspiration.
But it all has a scent of where I find my inspiration 🙂
So, really just go pick whatever you find useful from the designs, mix and match, and see where it takes you.
Magura 🙂

I do it quite often, but I keep them in the attic.

I was just going to buy as many 2SJ74BLs as I could. Yes, there are plenty of import problems to face. Sometimes they go off smoothly, sometimes one may even have to forfeit the parts.
So my question to Nelson is, does the new upcoming design use this specific and fast depleting P-channel JFET or should I just buy a few for building the F5?
I'll understand if Nelson chooses not to comment on the upcoming design this early.
Thanks.

I recommend that, but most of the things I'm working on can be done
with 2SK170's also.

Nelson, you are certainly the One and Only One.
This is both good news and great news - in one go.
Thanks,

I have a pair of Druids MK4, I just build the aleph 30 using BrainGT's boards and it sounds superb! I have never heard such bass from these guys (not even the ICEPower 200ASC's I built). And the mids and highs are very clean and slightly warm. I am enjoying this very much. It wasn't that hard to built and no adjustments required, the only hard thing was mounting 6 FET's to the heatsink on each side.
Hi,
Druids MKIV also sound very nice with an Aleph-X. 🙂
I´ve modified mine by disconnecting 4 of the 12 Fets, lower the bias from 7A to 4A. This way the single Jfet input manages a bit more bandwith.
I will also try a version with only 4 fets and 2-2.5A of bias (keeping the supplys at 23V). Power should still be more than enough.
I received a package of Lovoltechs last week so I´m ready for something new.....

I know this is an old thread but recently I acquired from a local DIYer friend a pair of Druid Mk4/08.
I think this may finally give me a reason to try building an F2 or F3.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Cheers,
Dennis

Congrats on getting a pair! I had a pair of Druid Mk4/08. They had the driver upgrade.
I enjoyed them and liked the sound with my F1J and F2J. I also used them with my F4 and various preamps but did not like them as much as with the early FW amps.

I think you should try the F2 (both with and without J) and the positive feedback F5 derivative 🙂.
Popcorn! Where's the popcorn??? No glory for you!
Congratulations on the new speakers Dennis!
