on a whim I bought an Artec ceramic Big Pole Jazz bass pickup set to go into a glarry 'GIB' P-J' bass. DCR on the coil is pretty low - inductance seems pretty high due to the relatively large steel pole pieces and would assume the alnico version to have a good deal less inductance (how much vs steel? I installed the neck pickup of the set at the bridge as its spacing was correct for the glarry's bridge cavity. (hopefully the neck pip isn't much different)
Until its setpu better i won't be able to evalue the new pup and how it might blend with the Glary P=pup but assume it wil be fairly thick sounding w/o a lot of tonal complexity.
Anyhow - which low cost pickups P & J in your opinion perform above their price points. I've just about lost all arm function so there's no gig.
I'm old- both arms very painful and can't bae

I have always used Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounds.
I usually stick to the Factory Fender pickups.
But when required at times to replace or provide
pickups for my Precision and Jazz Basses over the years.
I have compared to low noise factory Fender Active systems.
and demo numerous DiMarzio pickups.
I have just always liked the Quarter Pounds.

My metal neck Kramer basses had Di Mario P-bass pups - very good - strong- clea - I kept two one has double P-pups. Some of the metal neck Kramers wer very heavy and body rather dead - I sold my two XKB20 to pay taxes - they were light and one extremly lively - would have been a slapper's dream - maybe
These Glarry can be pretty good but a nightmare for me to fiddle with the plastic nut

MI industry is always interesting.
Was numerous neck through designs to improve sustain.
And a lot of active designs had more output and bright tone.
Worked for many players.
Since their heros or influences used bright tone
for certain genres. Specially "Metal"
My main basses were always Jazz Basses.
Many seem to deny that the basses they bought
we influenced by their favorite players.
I fully admit I was a Zeppelin Fan and ELP fan
So bingo that was the reason.
I bought my first P Bass since I was touring in the 90's
and wanted a lighter bass with smaller body.
Realized quickly that I hated the neck and was used to the Jazz Neck.
So that was my first " Custom" bass.
Basically a Maple Jazz neck on a lighter P Bass body.
Was playing " industrial metal" you could say.
Tried active, since that was a typically metal choice.
Hated them. I got metal tone from the blond neck
and new strings.
Non of those decisions by then were biased by my influences.
By then I was designing something for my playing preferences.
For speed I eventually had bigger flatter frets installed.
Probably could have bought 2 new basses by the time I paid
for all the custom work.
Best pickups I owned for tone was actually a set of pickups from
a mid priced Yamaha BB300. Didnt care the price or the politics
of where they came from. I liked the sound and output and that was what went
in my main bass. Other than that Quarter Pounds were the only thing close
to the Yamaha factory pickups.

I'm wondering if on my Glarry "GIB" PJ bass if I can come close to the sound of a Music Man Ray2 passive bass. The distance from the nut to the center poles of the Glarry's jazz-bass bridge pickup is 31.25". The current bridge pickup is an Artec ceramic magnet "Big Pole". Maybe a shunt C and series L? (are there any measurements for the various MM pickup and its cheap aftermarket clones ?
I can't judge sound quality til set up an amp and cabinet - my Joyo $14 headphone amp is pretty awful and the Wilkinson ceramic M series -P-bass plus Artec Big Pole Jazz pup sound little if any different on it than stock pups.

Artec's ceramic magnet "Big Pole" Jazz-bass pickup sounds like its >10dB weaker than the Wilkinson M-series P-bass neck pickup. I'd like to try adding a magnet to the Artec Jazz pickup - are there any ceramic (or other) bar magnets in that width that are inexpensive and in the US that would be appropriate to add to a Jazz bass pup?
