Here is a fun poll that applies to all systems and listeners.

Where do you usually set the volume control?

Please also describe the setting corresponding to clipping.

I usually set the volume control at 8-9 o'clock. The clipping point is 4-5 o'clock. The volume control is a standard audio taper with resistor loading.

With my gear, I have nice room-temperature/volume at around 2. Turning volume further up gets quite loud quite quick.
I don't like very loud music playback. (As I don't like very low volume playback either)

Don't people build their equipment to get the fullest range out of their volume control?

Mrs. Soulmerchant likes quiet chamber music in the background while she reads her book, so I made sure that the lower increments cover that nicely.

Mr. Soulmerchant sometimes likes to hear AC/DC shakin' the windows out of their frames (usually when Mrs. Soulmerchant is out of the home).

It's possible to make that happen. All you need to do it engineer it for that range.

The audio taper is supposed to match perceived loudness (logarithmic). I add resistors so that more of the range is allocated to lower volumes. Even then, the control is at 8-9 o'clock.

The poll shows a much wider range than I expected, and the distribution is bimodal. Some people prefer background music levels and others prefer realistic music levels. I think the wide range reflects more on listeners than equipment.

People don't seem to know their system's clipping point. It should be fully clockwise.

Thanks for the replies and keep them coming if you have not yet voted. 🙂

I've tried to set my systems gain up, such that I'm not dialing back the volume control to compensate for too much gain in the system. Thus, I'm in the 60-70 percent area. Even so, it's in the 55-65 region for CD's, and 65-75 for Albums, so my gains aren't perfectly set yet!!

I aim for 70-90 dB for most listening sessions, generally turn to "Loud!" then turn back 10%. Position varies by input. Currently my streamer level is around 12-1, while my CD player is more like 10-11. That's with the "low-gain" switch flipped on my preamp.

How would you gather listening level from the poll? I certainly didn't reply related to listening level. I replied to the question you asked.

If you'd like any meaningful correlation to listening levels, you can remove my response from your data.

Yeah. I’m using a passive preamp right now, which I often set at 90%. With my active preamp, it depends if I’m in low gain mode or high gain mode. If I swap to my other amplifier, I loose gain, so I have to turn the knob up.

I don’t really understand this exercise.
