New guy here,
Show me the plans, parts, and where to get them and I can build it. I’m clueless about all the technical jargon—I just want a great sounding subwoofer for both movies and music that's suitable for my small basement room.
I need plans for a proven design. If you can help, please see the attached PDF documents.They have the room specs and SketchUp drawings of how I'd like to finish the room.

Your size requirements seem to dictate an 8" woofer. Let's see what others come up with here. I have to leave the office now. 🙂
Thats a tall order with just an 8" woofer, considering he wants it for movies as well (IE: possibly sub-20Hz material).
I have read your PDF which describes the space as barely bigger than a walk-in closet. At nearly 17 foot long that would be the mother of all closets, more like a modest size UK lounge!
A single 8 inch will certainly work in the space, that does not mean it will give the absolute best results. Most so called subwoofers do not give any meaningful output below 20hz and it is not needed. For a TV room a closed box 8 inch will be fine and occasionally impressive if you are not used to bigger better sub's, or better still multiple sub's working less hard. Perhaps another small Sub hidden at the back of the room might be welcome.

My room is of similar size 10.5' X 18.5' rectangular and I am running four 12's and four 10's on a large amp,Ashley FTX2000.
Although they are not subwoofers and are just plain ole run of the mill fair quality stereo speakers.it gets quite thunderous in here at about 118db or so.
If I were using true subwoofers they would beat this system to the ground for sure.
I am using a mixture of JVS,Technics and I think Fisher cabinets.
Someday soon I will be building a new system but I a sure you that I will be using no less than 4 to 8 drivers per side.
Even as it sits it holds it's own outside very well,Just to give you some kind of an idea.
Because of the length of my room my lowest usable response is around 30Hz or so.
But when get some material the a good bass content it feels like it is just flowing right through my body like the wind does through the trees !!!
If this is the kind of thundering bass you want then I would go with no less than four 12's or six 10's in each corner due to the width restraints.
There are lots of configurations you can choose as this is only one and what I am using and it works very good for me right now.

Since the room is both rather small and probably intended to be not a single-person experience, the use of multiple small subs should be focus of this investigation (floyd toole's publications for more info on that). One sub will work great for one place in the room. Move a seat further and the response is all messed up. This also helps to make the individual sub smaller, since energy is spread even between them.
As to what kind of enclosure, i would go for sealed since its both are easy to build and hard to mess up. If the amp has a 10-20hz highpass, bassreflex could also be an option. Everything else gets too big too fast. Lastly, what kind of driver? This one is quite simple: the biggest ones that the bugdet and sence of aesthetics allow. Realistically, 4*8inch would be ok, i guess, but expectations have the tendency to grow.

I don't advocate the single 8", I was looking at the size constraints. That room is big enough for two 12", but with only 10" width under the TV, well... 🙂
I just reread the size requirements. You have stated 10 feet wide, I read 10 inches wide, sorry for the confusion. Looking again you probably could get away with two 10". If you are near Canada or the US, consider the CSS SDX10.

well to each their own. If I used a single 8", it would have to a state-of-the-art driver. Even though I never would. Because a 10" driver/enclosure isn't all that much more bigger.

I've made an executive decision and decided to go with Bill Fitzmaurice’s Tuba HT Low Profile sub. Bill’s forum members have given it a thumbs up if I place the business end closer to the corner than shown in the drawing .

Now it’s time to decide how to power this puppy.
Do you have any suggestions considering the small room size? I don’t have the plans yet but I’m thinking, based on its footprint, that it’s loaded with a 12" driver.
