there is plenty of chat regarding DAC's but not so much regarding the choice of player to use as a transport. Of course it must have a digital output but that aside what else makes one a better choice than another. I have these units-
Sony DVP-NS900v
Panasonic DV565A
Cambridge D300
Marantz CD52
the first two are DVD with SACD capability
what would be your choice and should I re-clock, I am using a Dacmagic plus

Something solid, something that doesn't vibrate, something that read accurately and has great error-tracking/reading ability.
IMO, the CD52 is the best transport you've got, with the lovely CDM4/19 mech, but no doubt needs to have all non-Nichicon lytic caps replaced for it to perform well & be reliable, and some upgrading to reach it's full potential. The other three units have junk mechanisms that aren't worth maintaining, let alone upgrading for transport use.
mechanism dipped into heavy, dense plastics and a current-starved spindle motor should do ok for start...

Good quality reliable/durable motor, controlled spinning speed, good clamping mechanism, steel CD drawer/holder (or compound ceramic, or ABS, or die-cast aluminum).

Thank you all for the input. I did indeed go with the CD52, I have two of them, the mechanism is easily the best, the swing arm tracks poor or damaged discs better. I have fitted a tentlabs Xo3 but cant get the reclock out to work don't know why.
It is an old unit and will benefit from better caps etc so that will get done. Now I have made my choice any other ideas to improve the CD52 as a transport. microx

Well, my old CD52 is sounding very good with the Tent clock even though I still cannot get the reclock output to work. Compared to the unmodified unit there is much more detail and a much less gritty sound. The dacmagic plus is better than the dacmagic3 I was using before. I think I will continue to tweak the player to see what more I can get, all ideas welcome! microx.
I think I have the solution for your SPDIF reclocking issue. If you look at the Tent XO 3, in one of the corners of the board, you will see a row of 3 pairs of pads that can be shorted out. Short out the pair that says SPDIF.
My XO3 is an old board (8-10yrs) and does not have the pads that you describe, it looks nothing like the board which is now being sold. The info I got when I bought it says SPDIF in and reclock out I think but there is nothing on the board. The clock is working gteat and I am SURE that I have the right pick up point on the CDP (pin 32 SAA7310) so either I am missing info or my XO3 is not reclocking.microx

Have you tried contacting Guido Tent on the issue? I always find him very helpful. Call him after 10am in Holland. The number is on his website.
