Hi all,
I want to build the LX521's from Madisound's flatpack:
The Madisound Speaker Store
I'm a total woodworking newbie.
What options are there for an idiot-proof, easy way to finish the wood?
Stain? Paint?
TIA

The easiest is just some Danish oil (Watco) or maybe tung oil. Available everywhere.
A couple of applications and you're done. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
Dave.

If you're using a clear finish like oil, you may have to be extra careful to remove any excess glue, since that'll affect how the wood absorbs stuff.
Consider trying different finishes on some scrap piece of BB.
If you wanted to paint them, the easiest is to pay someone to do it. Like a furniture refinishing shop, or an automotive painter. Or, since those speakers already look like sculpture, hire a starving artist.

FLAT BLACK -- simple and nice
I am sure that you have seen William's finished LX521's -- you might follow the same stragety -- simple "flat black" [General Finishes Lamp Black is simple to apply (uses a Foam sponge brush) and gives good results] with maybe something more "colorful" for the upper Baffle array and Baffle base. Just be sure to sand down the flat-pack with 320 GRIT sandpaper (and then clean it "dust free" -- before painting ) ...
