Okay, tonight, while recapping an old Zenith radio, I looked at the tubes, and noticed a long hairline crack in the 19T8 tube, My question here is, what exactly causes a tube to crack like this? It was never impacted by anything as far as I know.
Ice cold beer spilled on top of the radio?
Sudden extreme temperature change can easily crack glass.
It hope it didn't hurt the wood finish! What a waste of good cold beer.
Actually, not all glass in tubes is equal, like everything in electronics. Maybe there is a 0.1% failure rate and you are the lucky one! I just hope you drank most of the beer. LOL
Hopefully the tube isn't a coveted expensive one!
IMO, if it happens again with a new one, check for anything that could cause overheating (high voltages, etc)!
Good luck!

The crack in the glass starts just at the bottom spacer under the plates, and ends just before reaching the top of the tube. It doesn't seem to be enough to compromise the vacuum as the getter hasn't turned white.

It's just a matter of time, I'm afraid.
this happened me with an EL84 tube - the sockets were very tight and I had the tubes in and out a bit for testing - one of them went down. Best to get a replacement before it takes other components with it.
