What are these resistors?

I stumbled over some parts... and I’m tired of googling.. .

They kinda look like Allen Bradly, but I can’t find any mention of resistors with color code on top, brown vintage upristanding, upright, radial, and so on.

Next to each other, the similarities are easy to spot.

resistors?

Well the 8.2k is definitely a resistor, but I'm not too sure of the others.

On the device with the flat side... what does an ohmmeter say? It might be a diode.

The third device almost looks like an encapsulated inductor. Again, what does an ohmmeter say?

I forgot to point out that I bent the legs and stood it up so you could see the color code. The one the right is the same as all the others, except from the 8.2k one of course.

I get 1.23-1.34kOhm on my meter .. both directions. No inductance that I can find. Getting "Over Range!" in both High and LowX on my ebay meter.

Third times the charm. Inserted the component directry into the screw terminal and pushed the button. First two parts were 169 and 170pF .. the next two 162 and 165pF.

Looks like I have some pretty useless parts on my hand. 160-170pF range and also allows DC to pass.

Oh well .. maybe the next mystery parts are better. At lest I got some normal bradleys and a box of WIMA and ROEs 🙂

Shrinking Carbon Composition Resistors ! ... DAMN !

It's quite possible that if they are supposed to be 1K 5% and are measuring so high ...

... that the carbon inside may well have SHRUNK ! 😱

It happens over time & eventually you often find loads that have gone totally OPEN CIRCUIT ! :cuss: The carbon basically gets smaller & moves away from the leads inside the body, I believe. I had a whole bunch of Allen Bradley & vintage resistors, all carbon comp ... I thought HEY ! that's a bit of luck finding those ( they were Pops stash ) ... measured a few, measured a few more, then measured THE WHOLE DAMN LOT ! 😡

Not a SINGLE ONE was is spec. whatsoever, not even near ...

... they had ALL gone 'high' from their stripe value & some by a considerable amount. 🙁

RATS ! ... I thought, as I heaved the whole bloomin' lot into the TRASH BIN ! 🙄

Ask a guitarist. They swear upon old amplifiers with those carp comp resistors. It's an acquired taste, imho, 'cause they never heard or played through that amplifier when it was new and it's components still within specs. So they conclude that every amplifier needs carp comp resistors and more other magic things (»mustard« capacitors from Mullard e.g.) to get »that« sound.
Best regards!

Out Of Spec.

" You crazy man? Those are MAGIC NOS Resistors !!! Who cares how they measure? ... all that matters is how they sound .... "😀

I love vintage parts LOADS !

I love groovy geeetar amps & '60s stereos etc. etc. 😎

But ...

... only ones that are actually working PROPERLY. 😛

🙂

As I heaved all those ancient carbon-comps. into the dumpster ...
... I thought, am I doing the right thing here ? 😕

YOU BET ! 😀

Why would anyone want to put a component that is clearly heading for failure into anything ? 😱 Every single one I measured was either WAY over spec. ... a VERY bad sign. Or they had mysteriously, or not so mysteriously, gone OPEN CIRCUIT already ! No good to man nor beast. 😡

🙄

The ABs all seem to measure within spec.

Picked up some more parts. But I suspect a lot is just junk.

Im not into vintage gear and parts, but I can appreciate the build quality and effort put into the gear.

These are funny. Every single part looks different .. hand made by people with long hair while listening to Jefferson Airplane in the 70s?

Found loads of spare parts .. dont know what for, but looks well made. I think the tube boards might be for a Fender Super 60 amp .. not stereo hifi as I hoped.

" Tweek or die ! " ... Quite so ! 🙂

Hi Forman.

It looks like you struck the Swingin' '60s MOTHER LODE ! :yikes:

Might have been used in the Woodstock P.A. or something.

Those big fat Deep Purple ish (browny red actually) resistors ...

... are high-voltage high-stability carbon film (not comp.) types, RS still sell 'em, pretty good parts.

Some of the other resistors look interesting & I'd def. keep a few to use. Lots of nice yellow polypropylene capacitors, by the looks of ...

... quite usable & useful for some valve experimentation ... mmaann 😎

Can't see any handrolled hi-end magic wand type stuff ...

... you ever seen a hippie that'd spend that kinda dough on ear candy though ? :sly:

I just LOVE a good dumpster dive ! :lifesavr:

Did a GREAT one a while back, outside the local cellphone-mast ...

... LOADSA GOODIES ! 😀

Hi

A load of the **** variant ... 2-300kg easy. NOS, Used/tested OK, Pioneer SA-9100, SX-1010, SX-1080, tubes, etc.

Im no where near done sorting.

Nice to know .9

I think I have 40-50+ more in a box.... somewhere.

Some of the other resistors look interesting & I'd def. keep a few to use. Lots of nice yellow polypropylene capacitors, by the looks of ...

Those I recognized right away.. Wima, RoE, Rifa etc 😀

Yellow, Green, Red, Orange, White, transparent and blue from 68pF 1.5-2kV all the way to 600.000uF 6.3v

The big ones should do nicely for a spot welder.

Tube experimentation ? Im not a fan of high voltages. Maybe when I have learned to handle "low voltage". Still got loads to learn.

Some pictures taken while... sorting :sigh:😀

Let me know if you spot some magic parts 🙂

" Tube experimentation ? Im not a fan of high voltages "

Hi Forman 😀

Very wise to stick with low Voltages. 😛

Just remember all those fried hippies who thought they could tweek their geeetar amp ! 😱

R.I.P. :grouphug:

Just to be on the safe side ... 🙄

... you'd better send all the dangerous HIGH VOLTAGE ! 😱 stuff to me ! 😎

Drool ... Drool ! ... DROOL ! 😉

Hi there, Dylan.

While some (especially those named Dylan) enjoy the occasional sudden luminescence of a shorted HV cap or transformer, I do not...

What I might endure, is finding some tabs left behind by the guys who designed all those crazy resistors 😀

I took your advice .. and from the experimentation, a new kind of amplifier emerged.

Behold ... the sensational impedance impervious master reference amplifier. I just call it, The Erik 😀

WARNING ! ... oDd Hippie wiring job

.

Hi Forman. 😎

'The Erik' looks tasty ... I can't stop salivating & licking my lips.

It somehow reminds me of Sainsburys Red Hot Chilly Pepper corn chips ! 😛

It looks like it might be as heavy as my Crown DC300A ...

... bought it off a rich but deaf as a post transvestite D.J. from up North ! 😱

Crown managed to cram all the wiring inside the armour-plated main battle tank case though. 😉

Dylans wiring on 'The Erik' looks like quality heavy-duty ozone-free chocolate-core ...

... but DANGEROUSLY installed, musta learned his techniques from a real Pirate ! :Ouch:

Dunno about the Bi-Polar output-stage though ? ...

... they can sound 'nice' sometimes, but my Kiwi friend says they aint the 'British Sound'. 😕

Your 1K carbon-comps could be great for giving my $$$ ultra low noise hi-end preamp a '60s feel !

:happy1: :happy1: :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:
