What amp do I need?

You can use almost any amplifier you want. Different amps can sound different but this is a secondary issue that DIYers tend to pay a lot of attention to.

Sensitive speakers don't need as much power. If your speakers can handle the sound levels you need then the amp needs to offer enough power to do that. More power than that would go unused, but otherwise no harm if you don't push.

Similarly, less power can produce distortion if you push a low powered amp, which has been known to damage tweeters if you let it. It's sometimes the case that a lower powered amp can give better sound but it needs to adequately supply the speakers either way.

car stereo drivers? - a better forum for guidance might be there?

sensitivity of 96dB and power handling of 700W(180) would suggest they are designed to be ridden hard and put away wet -

nominal RMS power of at least 100 makes sense - the last car amp I bought (10+ yrs?) was a nice Memphis 4 channel unit with very flexible XO & filtering options - while most current head units of any merit will likely have some degree of DSP function, it's still nice to have the flexibility in the amp

Hi Chris,
Those will not dissipate 700 watts of power. Ignore the top power rating and concentrate on things that matter - like efficiency, Qt, Fs and stuff like that. Design for the largest box you can (don't fight physics). If you can use less power, the speaker and system will be more linear. A system that can deliver high SPL at 50 watts RMS is a happy system. High power is actually a negative - all other things considered equal. It reduces efficiency, shifts speaker parameters and clips easily.

anatech - yes I realize that car audio equipment specifications are, shall we say, "optimistic" , but the OP has really not yet answered probably the most important question as to application - i.e. exactly where and how are these to be used?

once again, sreten is quite right - for a lot of reasons, car audio speakers do not necessarily translate well into domestic home environments, and if that's where they're to be used, you could likely get much more musical results with fully engineered kits such as several by Zaph, SEAS kits, etc

no doubt dozens of other suggestions could be made, but until a more precise outline of application is give, none of our imagining answers the initial question
