what frequency band, and what type of signal are you looking at?

the log-rms converters (AD536) work very well, perhaps not quite as well as the LT1088 or the thermopile in an HP3403C, but good enough to be used in the HP3478 6 digit DVM. (btw, HP3403's can be had for less than $10, if it doesn't work, gut it for the chasis)

for noise measurement (100 milliHertz to 10 Hz) you might be well off considering some of the new ADC's made for this purpose -- power measurement has a new lease on life due to the cost of BTU's, and the desire for efficiency.
