Generally, the later in the chain you control the volume the better, in theory, the S/N ratio. If you lower the level just before the power amp, you also lower the noise produced by the preamp. If you lower the volume at (the front of) the preamp, you do not lower the preamp generated noise.

On the other hand, having two physically separated volume controls on the monoblocs is a nuisance. I would say, try it with the (existing?) preamp control. Most probably you are very satisfied with that. No use to seek problems where they are not.
