very short range monitor ?

Hello,

I'm looking for a monitor to use in video van.
Listeners are only at 1m from speakers.

Due to programs captured (live music:violin:), it will be nice to detect defects, but I understand that I'm far from normal listening conditions.

Auratone/advantone are used for proximity monitor, but is it the answer ?

thanks

Only 'experienced' some early Auratones, which to my 'ears' seemed to be mostly limited to the 'telephone (250-3 kHz) BWs' WRT SQ/lifelike accuracy, but considering your moniker (I have a 9444A/SA FWIW), my 'knee-jerk' response is the Altec/GPA 604 duplex was/is designed for as little as 3-4 ft broadcast/studio playback, so a DSP'd OB would be (no baffle per se) a viable option if there's enough budget/space for them or suggest a (budget busting?) ~3/4 -1" or maybe better yet, one of the new co-ax compression horn drivers with a 3/4" - 1" thick round over horn baffle + wide range (AKA 'full range') driver of your largest practical size for the rest of the (DSP'd OB?) BW?

Otherwise, one of the recent co-ax wide range drivers DSP'd to 'taste' in small (lossy vented?) cube for wide range monitoring.

Indeed, LS3/5A was invented by the BBC for mobile broadcast vans, as the bigger standard monitors used in their studio's did not work.

BUt know those have little bass, if you want bass a car subwoofer will have to be added, and inside a car it will never be accurate like a studio monitor, especially in the bass.

As said. Exactly the target of the LS3/5A. But with modern drivers one can build a similar size box with better performance. This was clear when i compared the last pair i restored to what i had kicking around. In particualr i was struck by how boxy they sound. Later comparison to a pair that were original showed that the restoration did what it was supposed to, the 2 pair were indistinguishable.

To be honest, i have some Mark Audio Alpair 10.3 bookshelfs that are more or less the same size (i think only a bit larger) that give decent bass to 45Hz, but they are not neutral neighter. It's always a compromise that you need to make. The LS3/5A was ment to mix voices, not music, and the frequency response is tailored to that in the original version.

These days there are many small monitors arround that can do better, going from the (commercial sold) Neumann KH80 or Genelec 8341A, and many diy designs (like the C-Note on parts express). Or you can make a LS3/5A inspired speaker, but just replace the drivers (and adapt the design for them) like i plan with the RS180-4 woofer and a SB26ADC tweeter in a closed box. That is a good combo for a nearfield i think (but the design is still in dev phase here). Other combo's are also possible probally.

I use the Fostex PM0.3dH monitors paired with the PM-SUBmini2. They are very small (100x185x130mm) and easy to place at monitor sides. A few months ago I've bypassed the internal amplifier of the monitors and now I use them as passive speakers driven by a low power class-A external amplifier. I noticed a improvement of the sound, and the setup is working better because I don't need to reach the controls at the speaker's back anymore. The internal crossover is very simple and I am planning to duplicate this setup by sourcing the drivers only and build a custom enclosoure. I wonder if a documented project with comparable size and Fostex drivers is already available, or if I will need to open the monitors again to check the driver's model numbers.

Those are tiny. These are the dims of our smallest set (for FF85wk, Alpair 5.2/3). Add a woofer (plans for some included) and they make really good hifi, both are quite articulate, they might do the job (of which i am not all that familar in practice).

happy new year

I thought to DSP cabinets like neumann or others classicals monitors. But "metal walls" leave me doubtfull on the result. Not sure that conceptors had anticipated van use...

About LS3/5A ; as usual, contributions on this forum let me learn more. I didn't know the story of this speaker. A path to follow !
