I have been looking for hv source for an els speaker. And found these on Aliexpress.
Neue DC 12V High Output Air Ionisator Luft Negative Ionen Anion Generator DIY|Luft-Reinigungsapparat Teile| - AliExpress
My idea is to regulate the output voltage by controlling the input voltage using an Lm317
Does anyone have practical experience with this ion generator as a high voltage source, or have any thoughts about it.
If it works, it is an incredibly easy and inexpensive way to make a high voltage supply for an electrostatic loudspeaker

Claus, I intended to build an "ionization circuit" from Elektor March '98 (H Bonekamp) with suggested modifications by Burkhard Vogel (Electronics World 2006) for powering Quad ESLs (57) / Braun LE1. The article title is "Improved Electrostatic Loudspeaker Power Supply for ..)
If you can't find the articles PM me and I will send them to you.
All the best, Kevin
P.S. Also go look at the ER Audio (Australia) website, they have a similar type of voltage source for a Cockroft-Walton ladder/generator.

ESL HV supplies are set and then ignored for decades so why fuss? Having said that, I'm happy to have a Chinese variable 8-12vdc supply (like us$12, a small board, just needs a transformer, and even has a voltage output display) powering a HV block-box (I forget the HV specialty company). So easy to crank up the voltage and crank it down.
But for a very long time, used a ladder with many steps and a wire with an alligator clip for choosing which step of the ladder to plug into. Simple. Variable. Cheap. Stable.

Thanks for all the answers.
But I may have expressed myself incorrectly here. I want to build a new speaker and look at a simple way to make an HV power supply. I do not have to replace an existing one. Therefore, I was going to use an ion generator and a variable DC supply.
Does anyone have experience with it? I can of course make a traditional ladder supply. But the second solution interests me if possible. It does not look so life-threatening. And the power should be enough.

Along with oil furnace ignitions (DAMHIK), I have heard disparaging remarks about that kind of power supply manufacture - unless perhaps you make it yourself.
The ladder and alligator clip I described provides the HV and gives you confidence n what you are working with.
EMCO.... that's the black-box HV specialty company with variable output. Often available on eBay when taken out of retired equipment like high-class medical gear. This is a fancy way to work, even powered by a $12 DC power supply.
I'd avoid ion and related smoke-eater HV bargain-priced stuff.
