Use two amps for more power? - NAD 3020

Hi!

I have two questions that no one really can answer it seems.

I have two NAD 3020 and I would like to to use both of them for more power. If thats not possible, maybe use them in a preamp- poweramp setup.

1. Is it possible to setup 2 amps to the loudspeakers (Heresy III) getting more power? For the Heresy loudspeakers biwiring is possible.

2. If above isn't possible to setup would it be good for the sound to use one 3020 as a preamp and the other as a poweramp?

All ideas are welcome!

Bi-wiring and bi-amping is not the same .

In bi-amping each NAD 3020 will feed ONE set of speakers --either the LHS or the RHS --thats feasible and that will give you more perceived power.

Bi-wiring is two sets of wires from the SAME amplifier for each channel for the high frequency section and the low frequency section --please bear in mind a tweeter is easily blown and will ( normally ) only stand a few watts but if you have a FULL RANGE loudspeaker unit then that is a different matter.

On the other hand this is disputed and bi-amping is classified as using a dedicated power amplifier for the lot - woofer /tweeter by REMOVING the crossover and using a built in specially designed amplifier feeding each section aka--- an ACTIVE crossover .

This subject has started "flame wars" elsewhere and I am not about to get into one but the NAD 3020 has separate preamp and power amp connections so some sort of arrangement is possible .

If anybody has a different opinion I am not going to get into an argument over this as books have been written on the subject.

Thanks, no need for flame wars!

So how would the setup look like bi-amping and are my amps functional/similar enough, as it is important? I guess there can be some differencies even if it is the same model.

I understand how to wire between the amps and loudspeakers. But from the source? I use turntable and mobile , Spotify.

Thanks again for taking the time Duncan!

To stop anybody chiming in and trying to criticise my comments I will use the NAD Electronics company itself who APPROVE of this action so email them if anybody doesnt approve of it.

Great! And then, refer to NAD manual, put the source Into first amp? Or do I also need a preamp and a active crossover?

Actually the NAD 3020 was designed to have a nominal rated power output of 20 watts but has no trouble driving driving lower impedance's with increased output especially difficult loads including Linn Isobariks .

Do not confuse that with the "D" digital version I am talking about the original on which I have , make sure that the input connectors ( phono ) have good chrome plating on them.

Klipsch Heresy III | Frequency response, Hz - 58—20,000 (by level (+/- 3 dB) | Number of bands - 3 (LF - 30.5 cm, paper-fiber composite, microwave - 4.45 cm, compression, with a titanium diaphragm and with exponential horn, HF - 2.5 cm compression, with titanium diaphragm and with Tractrix horn; crossover frequencies 850 Hz and 5000 Hz) | Acoustic design - closed box | Resistance, Ohm - 8 | Sensitivity, dB - 99 |
Although the Klipsch Heresy III loudspeakers are characterized as high-impedance on average over most of the operating range, they cannot be considered a light load for an amplifier. The reason for this is a decent spread of the impedance modulus values depending on the signal frequency (the maximum reaches 53 Ohm) and a large deviation of the phase angle in the region of the minimum resistance (Fig. 2). The sensitivity of the speakers turned out to be 4 dB lower than the rated value, although it is still beyond praise - 95 dB / W • m.
... the new loudspeaker version is equipped with titanium diaphragms in both cases. Other crossover frequencies gave a slightly narrowed band for the midrange (the previous version had 700 and 6000 Hz, respectively). Also, Heresy III has the ability to bivire connection.

With the ingenuity and knowledge, you can connect one amplifier to the input (crossover) of the subwoofer.
The second amplifier in the mode without preliminary amplification, turn on the line output of the first. Connect the amplifier output to the midrange input (crossover). It is advisable to put a non-polar capacitor at the input of the second amplifier, limiting the band below 500 Hz.
I do not recommend bridging because of the minimum impedance of 4-5 ohms

In this case I would definitely need a preamp and a active crossover. Are there cheap crossovers that is good?
There are many analog graphic equalizer units for sale used for ~$40 plus freight. You can use two channels of a stereo to set up low and high pass bands. Most pros now are using digital units and programming them with cell phones.
Else buy something new from parts-express or even behringer. 12 db/octave give sharper cutoff than 6 db/octave crossoevers. Note speaker crossovers are not suitable for bi-amping.

I will bi-amp as in picture. But I don't know how to setup the source, I guess to first amp.
