Use dimmer to extend filament bulb life?

Hi All.

I have just purchased an OHP with a DYS 600 watt bulb to make my first projector. I do plan to swap out the DYS for MH when I have the dollars, but for the meanwhile, the conventional bulb will do.

I know that in general, filament bulbs experience thermal shock when first powered on and this partly accounts for the 50-75 hour life span of a DYS. So my thought is to wire in a 600 watt dimmer in series with my power switch. My thought would be to "warm" up the bulb by bringing up full power over say 10 seconds.

Anyone done this and found it worthwhile?
