I recently set up a music server with an HP mini PC and a DAC from ebay (Chinese). The seller furnished a USB driver from XMOS which worked fine. I made the tactical error of upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10 and now the driver won't work. Ebay seller says I have the latest driver. Any suggestions? I'm considering a downgrade back to 8.1.
I have never had to add a driver for a USB DAC.
They just plug in and they work.
Try uninstalling the driver and then plug in the USB DAC.
Windows 10 should have a default driver for it.

Hi Nigel,
I tried that with no results. I can use the built in DAC to get music with the Windows driver, but Windows won't recognize my DAC without the driver installed. It just won't work with W10.

Hi,
It may be that the driver is unsigned.
In W10-32 you can force install unsigned drivers. Win10-64 has further restrictions and do not allow unsigned drivers. However it is possible to temporary disable driver signing in order to install a driver.

How to disable Driver Signature Verification on 64 bit Windows 8.1 or 10
default driver
Almost always results in sub-optimal performance of the USB sound card. Worse S/N, less clean background, higher distortion.

I was quite surprised how good my USB DAC's sound.
They don't come with a driver because Windows has a default driver for them.
I never got the message in Windows 10 about the unsigned driver. I did get it when I installed in 8.1 and did the workaround. I'll give it another shot before I reset to 8.1.
Thanks for the link.

Yeah, I don't really like the sound I'm getting from the built-in sound card. I really want to get the outboard DAC working again.

Only for USB V1.0 devices. USB 2.0 audio requires a driver. Most likely from Xmos. They hide this behind a wall and make it very hard to get. If the people who made your XMOS interface don't pay the money, they don't get access to the complete driver support that is required. Then you the customer suffer. The driver seems tied to the particular USB interface you have bought, it isn't generic.
That is what I determined. I'm still looking for the Windows 10 XMOS driver if you have any ideas.

I had the same problem with an XMOS dac upgrading from 8.1 to 10. In short, the Windows 8.1 driver will work, it just gets screwed up during the upgrade process as Windows decides to use its own driver for it. From memory i had to manually uninstall the XMOS driver, let windows install its own driver, then update the device driver with the genuine XMOS one and it worked fine.
