I have my own DJ business. I was djing a wedding lastnight & it dawned on me that I don't think my current sound system is loud enough. I'm starting to get unto bigger weddings 300+ head count. I'd like to be able to not have to push my system to get a ton of (high quality - not a distorted mess) sound.
I currently have a B52 Matrix 2000 system - I have two of them. Its pretty crystal clear. But the sub is 8 ohms I believe? pushing maybe 5-600 watts RMS and the tops are 2 way 12's pushing 400 watts @ 4 ohms (I think?). Both B52 systems are going on 6 years old. But are still going strong.
I know a little about a lot. I learn more things about audio by personal experience and what I read. Trouble is - I'm not even sure where to begin. I'd like to get (for the tops) dual 2 way 15's & for the sub an 18" folded horn. I'm open to other ideas as well? Also, what are things to watch our for or consider when ur comes to ohms/wattages etc? From what I understand u want ur amp to handle 25%+ more than your speaker RMS rating.
The events I do are 50% weddings and 50% HS proms & homecomings.
I hear very good things about Yorkville. But they aren't cheap. Price really isn't a factor. My budget is about 5k. I do have a brand new in box Crown XLS 402 amp. But from a quick look at the specs its not very powerful. Wonder if it could be used to run mono thru a sub?

Ideally with this sort of crowd, maintaining 90 over a large area would be ideal, not more sound at the front which would keep people from talking to each other up there. These are social events, not concerts. More than 2 speakers in 3 positions could be useful, but you would need a delay box to the rearward pair to keep from having a double image in the middle of the two sets of speakers.

Nobody's system is ever loud enough. Get on ethat is, and eventaully it won't be loud enough either.
2x15 mians aren't always the most practical thing for most DJs. Most of them sound pretty awful - unless you spend the $1000 apiece on ones with 2" HF drivers or get real 3 ways. Unless they are elevated in some way you can't get sound to the back of the room, and that's hard to do with a 130 pound cab. On a stage they do ok, but in a HS gym expect pole mouters to do better. The biggest thing you could easily get on a pole is a 2x12, and you won't want to do that unless you're in really good shape. And you won't find an entry level 2x12/2" - you've either gotta pay the big bucks or build it. A 1x12 or 2x10 is a good compromise, but don't go with the cheapest stuff or it won't be much of an upgrade from the B52's. Multiple small cheap cabs will never sound as good as two decent ones with a lot of power behind them. Unless they are designed to be arrayed - and then you're talking serious money..... times 'N'.
One 18" folded horn probably won't cut it - if you're not getting enough out of your two B52's. A single 18" horn puts out about as much as a 2x18 reflex cab, on half the power as a rule of thumb. To upgrade, you would want two or four - and a bigger amp than the XLS402. To me, that's a tweeter amp for the HF horns in the mains. There are some good 15" folded horn designs around here that are easy to build - and four of them and a good amp or two would not be outside your budget. Something like four SS15's and a pair of QSC ot Yorkie powered mains will probably be a significant upgrade.
I recently (maybe not so much now) built four TH18's to go with my 2x12/2" mains. Power is a QSC5050 on the bottom, 2450 for the 12's, and a GX5 for the HF. DCX2496 processor. The speakers were all DIY of course, but the total outlay was on the order of $5k to 6k with new electronics. You should be able to save some of that with used amps, and you don't feel the pinch as much if you upgrade over time.
