ucd180/400: psu caps and sound

hello all,

after the initial ucd180-400 rush i'd like to know what psu capacitors (brand, size) you guys are using and how much influence psu caps have on the sound of these amps.

I am using a total of 8 panasonic 2200uF FC capacitors and a couple of small black gates I had laying around. I've compared it with a number of other amps and my midband seems a little recessed. Only slightly, but still.
Amps i've compared it with include Audio Innovations (tube), diy gainclones and a set of active dynaudio (pro?) monitors.

IOW, what does your psu look like, have you been playing around with it and, if yes, what did it do soundwise...

My power supplies

I built a pair of 4 channel amps with the UcD180's to drive my Linkwitz Orion speakers.

My power supplys are based on comments by Bruno in post #258 of the "UcD180 questions" thread: "My own reference amp has a 160va transformer and 2x4700uF - for a stereo amp (2 x 90W)." My supplies per 4 channel amp are:

625va 30v-0-30v toroid
3 4700uF @63v United Chemi-Con KMH series caps per rail
2 standard 35 amp@600v bridge rectifiers.

These supplies seem rather small when compared to what others are proposing to use, but I'm really happy with the way these amps perform. The only change I'm thinking about making in the future is to to try some soft recovery rectifiers, or learn how to calculate for the proper R/C snubbers for the ones that I'm already using.

Others are may be thinking building an Class A amp ! :smash:

Class D amp have an efficiency of 91/93%.

Music is not a 10Khz sinus wave at full level.

I'm using 2 * RIFA PEH 200 22000µF 100V for my UcD400 stereoamp and 2 * PEH 200 22000µF 63 V for my UcD180 stereoamp...

I also have two UcD180 stereo amps equipped with some RIFA PEH 200 10000µF 63V that I had on the shelf...

I haven't had time to evaluate the differance yet, I'll be back...
