Check your wiring, or post photos if you like. Something has gone wrong.

In parallel they play, and in series they do not? Sounds like one of them is open. In parallel the good one makes all the sound, in series the open one breaks the circuit so neither sounds.
test each speaker individually.

As defined in the OP, its impossible, so some mistake, like a short.

If both play when in one connection style, then that proves that neither driver is faulty.
If one becomes silent in the other connection style, then that proves the builder has made a connection error !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, the missing piece of information. You don't simply have two speakers wired in series or parallel, you have a jack switching arrangement that is intended to do that.
