hi people

I repair, use and service the Technics 1210 turntables that are popular with the djs still using vinyl

I was possibly looking to find out if there are any good books written on the subject of record players specifically tonearms and how they are made and what materials / construction methods are the best

I kind of want to maybe start making slightly upgraded tonearms to fit the Technics (with out loosing the height mechanism like when you fit a rega arm for example)

Thanks in advance

Hi,

No book that I know of. You can research right here along with Vinyl Savior,Vinyl Engine, etc. You have to figure your skill level and the tools you have to make a decision on the construction of a tone arm. You Tube has many different tonearms you see operate and get some ideas. Personally, I will be making a linear tonearm researched and built by "niffy" and others. Good luck with your project.

There are two books out there that I know of that focus on the design of turntables. One is about the development and evolution of the td124. It is called Swiss Precision by Joachim Bung and is pretty hard to find due to it being out of print and relatively expensive. The other is the newer rega book that I have herd is a good resource that gives info on their philosophy etc, it is called: A Vibration Measuring Machine.

Cheers, theres also plenty of info on the internet if you doing some googling and poking around using terms like turntable design, plinth materials, etc. For tonearms the Nanook thread on here is a good place to start along with the diy schroeder thread.
