Hi All,
Could someone recommend a good book on pentodes and the different configurations for gain stages? The most recent article in AudioXpress on a universal output transformer sparked my interest, but it shows so many ways of connecting the screen grid for feedback, I don't understand it all!
I'm just looking for a good book (above elementary level but not too complicated) explaining pentodes and transformer coupling to them.

A very good book, answering your questions and a many more:
Morgan Jones, Valve amplifiers.

Jones's book is a must-have if you're trying to understand tube circuits. But a more comprehensive look at output stage connections and trade-offs can be found in Crowhurst's "Understanding Hifi Circuits," which I believe has been reprinted at AudioXpress.
Between these two books, you'll be an output stage maven.
